The cuter Shinkansen
The Shinkansen, Japan's bullet train, is sleek and swift - and loveable? Well, Sanrio's version of Shinkansen sure is. The same company who brought us Hello Kitty and My Melody introduced a cute and cuddly version of the Shinkansen a few years ago. This adorable character can now be found on notebooks, backpacks, and even tissue throughout Japan - and in Sanrio stores here in the US as well.
I just love how Japan has a cartoon mascot for everything.

Hello.
The Shinkansen character was totally new for me, but point taken, again. We use a cartoon mascot for everything even for medicine. I think that European or American people consider the kind of medicine which has a cartoon mascot on its package unreliable or childish, but we don't. The manga characters are very effective in making any goods familiar to the Japanese customors and easy to be sold by them.
This is exactly what the producer of "Hi hi Puffy AmiYumi"(The cartoon network) said about our culture, visiting a drug store in Shibuya.

Hi bun-san,
I think another reason why American companies don't use cartoon mascots as often is because there can be legal implications. Some companies who have used cartoons have been sued because people thought they were trying to make their product appeal to children. Such a situation is especially risky for companies selling medicine, alcohol, tobacco, etc...

Oh, that's it. Thank you for your wonderful explanation. I heard that recently there are many frivolous lawsuits in America such as about the finger-in chilli of Wendy's, about the hot coffee of McDonald...I guess you must be sick and tired of the trend. Please Take care!

Hi bun-san,
You're right! There are so many crazy lawsuits in the US. I heard soon some people want to sue Coca-Cola for providing sugary beverages to kids. What will be next??

Hi Dory,
I agree! I think it gives people something to be happy about in relation to the company or product.

For sure? Unbelievable. I wish the trend will change soon. If it doesn't end, I will sue someone in America for it... Just kidding.

Oh no, bun-san! Maybe you'll have to sue me if the stories on my blog start to become too boring! :)

Thanks... I hope not!
